I’ve been consuming porn for about 20 years now. Longer than I should have been according to laws and decency and whatever, but those are the facts. I’ve been staring at naked women doing all sorts of things for most of my life. I’ve seen where porn’s been and I have a pretty good idea of where it’s going, and I’m looking forward to it.
When I first started watching porn it was the early days of the Internet. Those days when you lost wood waiting for one picture to load. The first era of the porn gifs, when they were all sorts of orange and pixelated. It was chaos. You could find just about anything you wanted as long as you were willing to dig deep in searches and didn’t care that it looked awful.
Then came the late 90’s/early 2000’s. We had Yahoo Groups and amateur sites and the rise of the network sites. Quality rose. You could actually watch video clips, usually not more than maybe 30 seconds. Like many a young men of the time, I found sites like Bang Bus. Quick and dirty videos shot handheld on okay equipment by people who didn’t really care as long as they got the tits and the fucking in there.
Those sites really defined the porn of the 2000’s. It was all “reality” or “gonzo” porn. It could just have been you and your friends with a camcorder and some random girl who totally looks like a porn star but isn’t, is she? (She was). It was all about a particular type of fantasy and cheap production. Even the sites that weren’t doing the “gonzo” porn were making stuff that looked cheap. There were DVD’s out with higher quality the whole time, I know, but I, like I think a lot of porn fans of my era, was mostly tied to the web
That still exists. Those sites still exist. They do well for themselves. I have noticed something recently, though. Since I started doing my, ridiculously named “Blogoporno,” I’ve seen a rise in interest in quality. People who wanted to make porn but didn’t want it to look like shit. There were the Camille Crimson’s out there shooting arty looking blowjobs. There were the Richard Avery’s shooting porn stars with some actual skill. People producing porn for the web were starting to give a shit.
Now, I’m starting to see it more and more. Just making an effort. Sometimes they’re not really doing that much differently. Porn is looking better than it has in a long time. Some people are actually taking care to shoot in a way that doesn’t suck. It’s happening more and more. I love it. It seems to be the new direction that my beloved Internet porn is taking. I’m looking forward to more of it.
We’ll always, I think, have the thrown together porn, the “gonzo” or “reality” porn. It’s cheaper and easier. Camera, girl, blowjob, fucking, anal, cum shot, throw it online is a workflow that’s probably going to stick around. I’m just hoping that we’re seeing a new chapter where that style is overshadowed by people who give a shit about making something that actually looks like they gave a fuck about what they were doing. Then, we can focus on ending porn parodies and maybe making story porn that actually makes me want to watch the rest once I’ve gotten my business taken care of.

Yes! I am quite pleased as well. In the past, I never really liked porn very much until I was introduced to the higher quality stuff, and I wonder if it isn’t because of the sort of porn that was (and is) so prevalent.
